History of the Roze Filmdagen in Amsterdam

Historical Background of the Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival: The movie festival started in 1996 at two venues in Amsterdam: a little underground theater called Cavia and Cinema Rialto. The first edition was in June at Gay Pride Festival Amsterdam and took four days. Over the years, the festival grew bigger and moved to Cinema de Balie and the Film Museum (currently located at EYE). The festival was rescheduled from November to end up in March. Since 2014, the cinema Het Ketelhuis has been the main venue of the Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival. Knowing about this history, you will understand better why Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival 2024 is now celebrating its 27th edition, although it started 28 years ago.

In the past years, the LGBTQ+ Festival today featured more than 120 movies with topics not only about Gay Men but also Lesbian topics, as well as transgender, intersexual, and mixed movie material for a diverse, colorful, and peaceful art festival. The festival is located right in the middle of one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world, Amsterdam.

21st Edition of the Roze Filmdagen 2018

From the opening film to the final film, the LGBTQ Film Festival “Pink Movie Days” 2018 is literally and figuratively setting off 125 movies from 40 different countries. The 21st edition, from 8th to 18th March 2018, promises to be exciting from the first moment on, with great musical time travel to an intimate ‘old school’ camp trip to the finish line. Everyone is welcome to join in on one of the 125 trips the festival offers with its non-everyday, LGBT-related eye-openers from countries such as Iran, India, Puerto Rico, and Kosovo. We can experience personal quests from up close, like a Roma trans boy on the train to a better life in Prague, a diverse Filipino family exploring the country in a dilapidated van, or a French filmmaker who makes a tour through cinemas in run-down coastal towns.

But characterful stories from better-known countries like Finland, Germany, and the United States of America will also be shown! Join the cultural community event at Het Ketelhuis and Westergasfabriek at Wester Park, Amsterdam, that goes on for eleven days. And don’t miss the chance to meet and mingle with filmmakers and visitors who celebrate sexual diversity in the Dutch capital Amsterdam starting 8th of March, and ending with a world premiere on the 18th of March 2018.

The Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam LGBTQ Film Festival 2017 will take off with an opening night on March 9th at the Ketelhuis and Westergas Theatre in Amsterdam Westerpark with the screening of the Irish movie ‘Handsome Devil’, directed by John Butler for 400 guests.
