The 10 Best Lesbian Movies 2018 selected by the Dutch LGBTQ+ Film Festival Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam. It is time to get ready for the biggest Dutch film festival, “Pink Film Days.” In 2018, we teamed up with the festival director Werner Borkes to select the best Lesbian movies for 2018, showcasing love between two women or girls, female sports events, or normal relationship dramas worldwide. This year the LGBTQ Film Festival in Amsterdam is celebrating its 21st edition, welcoming film and movie enthusiasts from all over the world to enjoy features like the German movie “Axolotl Overkill,” the US American drama “My days of Mercy”, and the award-winning drama “Sisterhood” from Macau.

#1 Anchor and Hope | England / Spain

The first movie on our list of the Best Lesbian Movies 2018 is the English/Spanish feature “Tierra Firme – Anchor and Hope”, a bittersweet romantic comedy with two powerful women as the main role. With space tight on their London houseboat, Eva is not happy when her partner Kat invites over her old friend Roger from abroad. Although, on second thought, it could be an answer to their desire to have a baby together. With great chemistry and an emotive and nuanced script, this is a smart, funny and bittersweet modern rom-com with a delightful twist.

#2 Axolotl Overkill | Germany

Next on our list is the raw and wild movie, after the identically named bestseller by Helene Hegemann. Mifti is sixteen, looks like she’s twelve, acts like she’s in her mid-thirties, and has lived with her half-siblings in a shared Berlin apartment since the death of her mother. Her father is more interested in art than people; given this backdrop, going to school makes less sense than living life between parties, drugs, affairs and kitchen-table polemics. She’s wild, sensitive, in love and obsessed with Alice, an older, enigmatic and attractive white-collar criminal. Based on the popular novel with (almost) the same name.

#3 Becks | United States of America

Nothing better than a new love to forget your ex-girlfriend, right? Betrayed by her girlfriend, aspiring singer/songwriter Becks returns to small-town America and her ultra-religious mother. After some self-pitying couch potato time, she ventures out into the world again, with some scandalous affairs waiting to happen. Tony Award winner Lena Hall shines in this warm, sensual, and fun tale of a love life going bad in all the good ways.

#5 Holy Champ! | Spain

Singing nuns, lesbian love and a God who loves Whitney Houston … Do we have to say more about number 5 on our Best Lesbian Movies 2018 list? We do… because there is something brewing at this summer camp run by nuns. Forbidden love, unknown feelings, and a true religious epiphany as God wear a sparkly outfit. All are taken in stride in this delightful and campy musical extravaganza from Spain, that’ll have you cheering and humming along.

#6 My Days of Mercy | United States of America

Ellen Page and Kate Mara at their best in the emotional drama “My Days of Mercy”. With her father on death row, Lucy has been a passionate campaigner against the death penalty for years. Every weekend, she and her siblings travel to a protest outside a jail. And every week they are met by death penalty supporters. Then, one day, one of ‘those people’, a young woman named Mercy, starts chatting her up. With stellar performances by Ellen Page and Kate Mara, this is a thoughtful drama on an emotional subject making it in our Top 10 list of the Best Lesbian Movies 2018.

#7 Signature Move | United States of America

Mexican women’s wrestling and romantic troubles make our Lesbian movie number 7 to a true LGBTQ+ festival favorite. Deliciously entertaining, this colorful love story is as much about culture as it is about love. Zaynab is lesbian, Muslim, and of Pakistani origin. With an overbearing mother, things get complicated as she meets flirty ‘love-em-and-leave-em’ Alma, while she is also dabbling in her new-found love for Mexican style wrestling. Warm and witty, this is a real crowd-pleaser of a movie.

#8 Sisterhood | Hong Kong/ Macau/ Taiwan

Among the 10 best Lesbian movies 2018 you will find “Sisterhood”, a bittersweet and prize-winning drama from Macau. Love intertwines at the wrong time.
