Top 10 Queer Movies 2020 at Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival
Our Top 10 list of the best Queer Movies 2020 selected for the Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival Roze Filmdagen 2020. Since 25 years, the biggest Dutch LGBTQ+ film festival is inviting the LGBTQ+ community to see the best new LGBTQ+ related movies. To make sure, you won’t miss any of the great movies and films from the Philippines to Germany, from Argentina to Canada or from Panama to Israel, we teamed up with festival director Werner Borkes to select some of the best movies about queer love, threesome relationships, trans characters and love stories in difficult cultures from around the world. In 2020, the LGBTQ Film Festival in Amsterdam will celebrate its 23rd-anniversary featuring movies like the German movie “Heute oder Morgen”, the trans story from Panama “Todos Cambiamos” and the Canadian movie “Jeune Juliette”.
Top List of Queer Movies 2020 at Roze Filmdagen
The opening night of the Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival will be held on 12th March 2020 continuing for 11 days in total until 22nd March 2020. This year, the festival will be screening again to feature movies, documentaries, and short movies coming from many different countries. But don’t worry, you won’t get lost with our list of the best gay movies including trailers and screening information selected for the queer and trans movies of this year’s film festival for a couple of men. #1 This Is Not Berlin (este no es berlín) | Mexico
1986. Mexico City. Seventeen-year-old Carlos doesn’t fit in anywhere: not in his family nor with the friends he has chosen in school. Set as a modern-day road movie-adaptation of The Breakfast Club, the film follows the story of five teenage outcasts, who escape a private treatment facility in hopes of attending the infamous Dreamland Music Festival. Led by a transgender male, Kai (Tyler DiChiara), and with help from a social media influencer, a football player addicted to opioids, Theo, who suffers from bipolar disorder, and Sawyer an alien-obsessed nerd, the five embark on the journey of a lifetime. – Relish.

#6 Yo, Adolescente (memories of a teenager) | Argentina
Number six on of our Top 10 Queer Movies 2020 list is the Argentinian movie Yo, Adolescente. After the suicide of his best friend and the fire in a local venue, between recitals, illegal parties at an abandoned warehouse, high school, and beach holidays, a year passes by in the tormented life of Zabo, who writes everything he feels and lives in his blog, “Memories of a teenager”. – Yo, Adolescente.

#7 Todos Cambiamos (everybody changes) | Panama
A reminder on the US American TV show Transparent, a story around a Los Angeles family and how they are coping with their father coming out as a trans woman. But Todos Cambamos takes place in Panama. The Ponce family is the perfect family living in the quiet mountain town of Bambito, Panama. Also, the feminine feel of the father of the house gets a place in the form of a regular date-night with mother Carol. But when Lizzie decides to definitively leave her masculine facade behind and openly come out of the closet as a trans woman, everything seems to collapse. The film will receive the HIVOS – FREE TO BE ME award. – Todos Cambiamos.

Queer movie number eight is an Edition Salzgeber movie, the independent German film distributor and publisher based in Berlin. Niels and Maria are thrillseekers. They meet English student Chloe and the three of them have a great summer full of passion and romance. Push and pull, back and forth, the trinity comes together and apart, following the languorous rhythm of hot and drunken days without much more to do than plumb their desires. But can they sustain this small paradise? – Heute oder Morgen.

The pressure to maintain a perfect image on social media plays out in this teen drama. In their quest to get the perfect body for prom night, three high school girls will do anything. Including selling a kidney to get plastic surgery. For one of the girls, going under the knife is particularly urgent, as she’s a trans girl whose father won’t support an operation. Her journey towards acceptance of herself and by others is masterfully portrayed by trans actress Strav Strashko. – Flawless (HaNeshef).

#10 Jeune Juliette | Canada
Last but not least, we put a Canadian film in our top queer movies 2020 list! In this rousing comedy, Juliette and her best (and only) friend Léane don’t like gym class. Actually, they don’t really try at all. Rather, they skip class, talk trash about the other kids and host a radio show that everyone complains about – but they don’t care. She befriends an autistic boy, and together they form an irresistible outsider’s alliance. Trouble brews when Léane falls in love with Juliette… Colorful, kooky and cool. – Jeune Juliette.

List of the best Queer Movies 2020 selected for Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam
Of course, our top 10 list of queer movies 2020 is just a selection for some guidance to get an overview for a festival visit. Check the whole program of the Roze Filmdagen for all movies, films, and documentaries! This year again, it is possible to support the Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival with two different kinds of memberships (website in NL/EN).
Option 1: Become a Pink Member with a one-year membership of about €50. You will get a 3 Euro discount at a full price ticket during the festival and discounts throughout the year for the Gay Night at Het Ketelhuis, and sometimes other festivals and events Roze Filmdagen is cooperating with.
