Our Top 10 list of the best Lesbian Movies 2020 selected for the Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival Roze Filmdagen 2020. For 25 years, the biggest Dutch LGBTQ+ film festival is inviting the LGBTQ+ community to see the best new LGBTQ+ related movies. To make sure, you won’t miss any of the great movies and films from Germany to Mexico, from Australia to India, or from the USA to Austria, we teamed up with festival director Werner Borkes to select some of the best movies about lesbian love, relationships between different generations, and love stories in difficult cultures from around the world. In 2020, the LGBTQ Film Festival in Amsterdam will celebrate its 23rd-anniversary featuring movies like the German movie “Cocoon (Kokon)”, the Australian story “Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt)” and the Indian movie “Catamaran (kattumaram)”.

Top 10 List of Lesbian Movies 2020

The opening night of the Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival will be held on 12th March 2020 continuing for 11 days in total until 22nd March 2020. This year, the festival will be screening again feature movies, documentaries, and short movies coming from many countries. But don’t worry, you won’t get lost with our list of the best lesbian movies including trailers and screening information selected for the lesbian part of this year’s film festival for a couple of men. #1 Defiant Souls (insoumises) | Switzerland & Cuba

The first film on our Lesbian Movies 2020 list is called Insoumises and is a Swiss-Cuban co-production. Dressed as a male, a female Swiss doctor causes one of the most scandalous trials in colonial Cuba. Living life as Enrique Faber in 1819 Cuba, he opens a medical consultation, treats blacks and slaves, marries a beautiful and young local woman makes people jealous. An attack on him reveals the true gender of Enriqueta who was then thrown in jail. Based on a true story. – Defiant Souls (insoumises).

#2 History Lessons (clases de historia) | Mexico

The 60 years old junior high school history teacher Vera becomes friends with the new and rather rebellious student Eva who wakes all kinds of feelings in the terminally ill, older lady. A sweet story about a relationship between an older lady and her new student who is about to change both lives rediscovering the joy of life. – History Lessons (clases de historia).

#3 Cocoon (Kokon) | Germany

Lesbian movie number three comes right from the premiere at the German film festival Berlinale in Berlin. Nora, a shy 14-year-old Berlin girl, will never forget this way too hot summer. Surrounded by people with disrupted biographies, from different cultures and backgrounds, she makes her way into adulthood. Nora falls in love with another girl learns to stand up for herself and gets heartbroken for the first time. Straight from the Berlinale premiere. – Cocoon.

#4 Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) | Australia

A romantic comedy about high school girl Ellie who falls for Abbie. But when the ghost of Ellie’s lesbian, activist, aunt shows up and wants to help her to get a date with Abbie, Ellie starts to second guess the elaborate plan — and question the circumstances of Tara’s death. Good to know: Queer Screen’s 27th Mardi Gras Film Festival 2020 will open with an Australian feature for the first time in its history with the World Premiere of Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt).

#5 Catamaran (kattumaram) | India

Part of an emerging queer cinema from South India, Kattumaram tells the story of a young woman who lives with her uncle in a small fishing village. She falls in love with a new teacher who just arrived in town. The community is shocked, but how will her uncle react? – Catamaran.

#6 Between The Seasons (gyejeolgwa gyejeol sai) | South Korea

Movie number 6 of our lesbian top list for the Roze Filmdagen 2020 comes from South Korea and is about an extraordinary love story. Hae Soo moves to another city and opens a café to start her new life. Ye Jin, a high school girl, starts to work at Hae Soo’s café becoming a frequent customer. And how it turns out, Ye Jin falls secretly in love with Hae Soo. This extraordinary tale about a love affair between a trans and a lesbian develops into a touching and thoughtful story about trust, tolerance, and self-acceptance. – Between The Seasons.

#7 Bonnie & Bonnie | Germany

The next German movie in our top lesbian movies 2020 in Amsterdam is from Edition Salzgeber and about two girls, one from Albania and one from Germany. The two girls from rivaling street gangs in Hamburg, Germany fall in love. Although Yara und Kiki try to hide the relationship, their love for each other eventually surfaces. They are leaving their conservative families in Hamburg behind driving south in a stolen car. – Bonnie & Bonnie.

#8 Same But Different: A True New Zealand Love Story | New Zealand

Lesbian movie number eight on our list is about a true love story of film director Nikki Si’ulepa and producer Rachel Aneta Wills, who first meet at a film festival. This romantic feature is inspired by their bumpy journey towards marriage. Director Si’ulepa wanted to “offer a glimpse into same-gender relationships” and tell a “true, romantic love story that people can relate to”, states NZonScreen. – Same But Different: A True New Zealand Love Story.

#9 The Ground Beneath my Feet (Der Boden unter den Füßen) | Germany

When her older sister has a mental breakdown, the cracks in her armor become harder to ignore, and she must start to confront her demons. List of the best Lesbian Movies 2020 selected for Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam

Of course, our top 10 list of lesbian movies is just a selection for some guidance to get an overview for a festival visit. Check the whole program of the Roze Filmdagen for all movies, films, and documentaries! This year again, it is possible to support the Amsterdam LGBTQ+ Film Festival with two different kinds of memberships (website in NL/EN).

Option 1: Become a Pink Member with a one-year membership of about €50. You will get a 3 Euro discount at a full-price ticket during the festival and discounts throughout the year for the Gay Night at Het Ketelhuis, and sometimes other festivals and events Roze Filmdagen is cooperating with.

Option 2: Become a Platinum Member with a one-year membership of about €750. With a personal Passepartout, you will have access to all movies, you will receive a unique Roze Filmdagen shirt, and you will have access to several events during the festival.
