Scar Tissue Dutch Gay Short Movie – Imagine you are living in a homophobic country where there is no other way than hiding your love for the human being you want to be with. Moreover, your home country is the battleground of a civil war. To survive and being able to see a future for yourself, there is only one thing you can do: leave your place of birth behind and try to find somehow peace in a world fundamentally different from where you’re coming from. Scar Tissue, the Dutch short movie, written and directed by Nish Gara and produced by Martijn Krediet tries to show in 13 emotional minutes how a casual hook-up between a Syrian refugee and a Dutch gay man, can end up being more difficult than you would think.
The gay short movie will premiere during the 20th edition of the Roze Filmdagen (the biggest Dutch LGBTQ Film Festival in Amsterdam ) on March 11th with two additional screenings as part of the Migrant & Bi Cultural Stories during the two weeks festival. As gay couple travel bloggers, our biggest motivation for our gay-friendly travels is to show you the best places to travel openly gay without problems. Syria, as much as many other countries of the Middle East sadly is not one of those places. By playing the part of Johan, Daan was able to get a small glimpse into the world of the gay refugee. The complete short film “Scar Tissue”
“We come from two different worlds, Johan”
Sami is a gay Syrian refugee who finds himself dwelling the streets of Amsterdam, and Johan, a Dutch gay man who is enjoying life in one of the most gay-friendliest cities in the world. Thanks to the well-known chatting app Planetromeo, the two guys meet up at “Prik” (the best gay bar in Amsterdam). What seems to be easy for most European men can be very difficult for a refugee who is trying to fit in. Sami wants to shake off his past by adapting to the western lifestyle as good as he can but he didn’t expect it would be possible to feel at home… even for a few hours.
Check the Scar Tissue website for upcoming screenings.
Short interview with Daan Colijn (Johan)
“As an actor, Scar Tissue was a very short but beautiful project to be part of. A fun coincidence is that Noah (who plays the Sirian refugee Sami) and I were together in the same class on the Amsterdamse Toneelschool & Kleinkunst Academie. We never worked with each other after school, but we had immediately the same click that we had 10 years ago. This made it a lot easier for us to be quickly intimate on camera during the few days of filming. I think this translated very precisely onto the screen.
The crew was an interesting mix of film professionals and guys who had to flee their country. It was sometimes heartbreaking to hear their stories, but also an excellent motivation to do our upper best while making this short movie. We sometimes forget our privileges, living in a big western city where you can be and act however you like. There are still numerous places around the world where this is not possible and where people have to lie to their parents about love or even live a secret gay life. Being born and raised without any of these issues, it is sometimes difficult to imagine how to life without being totally honest. I mean, I remember my life before I came out, and I wouldn’t change places with anyone to be stuck in that closet again.
I think Nish did an impressive job in writing a story that resonates with people who lost their home and heart. I hope the movie can give some comfort and solace or even push some painful spots while things get set in motion to heal.”
