Gay Cruise La Demence 2016 – The Tour
In 2016 the cruise ship SOVEREIGN set sail for the 6th gay cruise along the south coast of Spain. Starting from Barcelona, the cruise had its first stop in Málaga after a relaxing day at sea. Driving at night through the Strait of Gibraltar, our second destination was the city of Cádiz followed by the Balearian island Ibiza the next day. After another day at sea, the SOVEREIGN set sail to our last destination Valencia before driving back to Barcelona. During this cruise, the program on board was loaded with entertainment, parties, and possibilities to get to know your fellow travelers. Food and drinks were provided 24 hours a day and the DJ line-up gave its best to entertain everyone with the right music and ambiance.
The Cruise Ship, the Cabins, and the Food
The SOVEREIGN, built in 1987 in France, was until 1995 the biggest cruise ship in the world. As part of the fleet of Royal Carribean International, the “SOVEREIGN of the Seas” was primarily cruising through the Carribean waters. The ship became famous for the second time while she got refurbished as part of the Travel Channel mini-series documentary “Dry Dock: A Cruise Ship Reborn” in 2004. Just 4 years later in 2008, she became part of the fleet of Spanish Pullmantur Cruises.
The “floating hotel for one week” is equipped with a multi-deck atrium, 13 floors, 9 bars, 5 restaurants, 4 pools, a spa, casino, and broadway theater. Our outside cabin with a window in the front part of the ship on floor 4 was well maintained and spacious enough for us two. The style of the ship became old over the years but considering the age of this “Ship-Lady”, it was like a retro trip back in time. If you try to see the story behind small (funny) details from the 80s and 90s, it was a pleasure to be hosted by this primary rock of cruise history with all its old fashioned but charming uniqueness.
Food & Drinks 24hours on the Cruise ship
The food was oké and especially the pasta evenings were heaven on earth for Daan and so was the dessert buffet for Karl. Although after a week everything became a bit the same. Vegetarians pay attention and ask very specifically: chicken, fish or seafood in salads, soups or kinds of pasta sometimes will be marked as vegetarian food. Non-alcoholic drinks are for free throughout the whole ship all the time. Cocktails, wine, beer or long drinks have to be paid by showing your boarding card and signing the bill. Mixed with some local food experiences during our discovery tours in mainland Spain, the buffet and a la carte dishes on board were satisfying although the vegetarian options could have been more diverse.
What to do on a Gay Cruise “a La Demence”?
Embarking the cruise ship means entering a gay and homo-normative environment. Everything is gay, gay is normal and so every queer passenger is literally behaving and expressing himself how he/she/it feels like. For such a rainbow environment it is right and proper to have some old fashioned drag queens hosting and presenting the show events. The ABBA show, Lady’s night, stand-up comedy, karaoke and even two
live porn shows were part of the events on board the cruise ship SOVEREIGN. With all these entertainment highlights and the list of theme parties you might get a little exhausted, let us tell you. So choose wise which you wanna do but then go for it. Nevertheless, we advise you to be at least 20 min before the show starts at the theater (or any other location), to get (good) seats. Don’t forget to bring your drinks, they are allowed!
At Daylight: Off the Ship to see the Spanish World
During daytime, the passengers have the opportunity to leave the ship for excursions planned by Pullmantur or just to travel under one’s own steam. We found the Pullmantur excursions very expensive and since we are more the “do it yourself” kind of travelers we are not very fond of pre-timed planning nor big groups. Especially when you are already a whole week on a boat with thousands of men and only your cabin as a place of privacy. We explored the cities of Malaga and Cádiz and the island of Ibiza on our own which was a good choice. But if you don’t feel so adventurous, relaxed on a planned trip or just grab a cocktail, lay down and relaxed the whole day on deck. It’s your holiday!
During Nighttime: Dance until Sunrise on the cruise
During nighttime, you won’t be bored during The Cruise. Already late afternoon the relaxed lounge music turns into a mix of modern and well known electronic beats. It’s party time! With a total of nine different themed parties, you don’t have to be afraid of missing a chance to dance. From a sporty jockstrap to high heels to your leather harness, with themes like Disco, Sports, Neon, Fetish and the Ladies T-dance you need to bring your biggest suitcase. It is a good thing that most of the outfits don’t have to be more than nice shorts and some props. But if you wanna dazzle your fellow passengers you have to step up your game because boys will start sewing months before departure!
La Demence and it’s annually Gay Cruise
La Demence is not the only gay cruise in Europe nor worldwide though the concept and idea behind The Cruise are unique. The first priorities are the party and entertainment program brought to the cruise guest by the hilarious drag queens Nickie Nicole, Sophie Russel, Serge-Maman, La Diva and, of course, Koka. Luxury, extraordinary food or fancy facilities are only secondary. Since the cruise should be payable also for a younger audience, the choice for a cheaper and consequently older cruise ship was made. Since we didn’t spend so much time in our cabin and the old ship was relatively well maintained, we didn’t mind.

Gay Men Tips La Demence The Cruise
It was our first Gay Cruise La Demence ever and we wouldn’t have missed it for the world. The biggest surprise for us was the unbelievable relaxed and friendly atmosphere between the guests but also the friendly staff. And not to forget the bunch of people we got to know and can now call our friends. The next trip to visit them is already in planning. Thanks to the crew from The Cruise and thanks to all the passengers, friends and drag queens, we will come back!
