[edgtf_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”#3f6557″ background_color=””]O[/edgtf_dropcaps]ur 5 Top Lesbian Films Filmfest Homochrom 2018 in the German cities Cologne and Dortmund. It’s autumn, that means it‘s cinema time again in Germany! “Couple of Men” had a nice talk with festival director Martin Wolkner about the programme of the 8th Filmfest homochrom in Cologne and Dortmund. It has quickly become the second-largest among a very active crowd of two dozens of queer film festivals in Germany. (Then again Cologne is still the homo capital of Germany, isn’t it?) But the filmfest homochrom has also been one of the up-and-coming festivals to look for rare film discoveries and surprises. The biggest one yet might be that admission to all films is free this year. So grab your friends and head to the cinema. There’s no good reason to not see the whole festival, but if you have a good excuse and need to choose just a couple, you might like our suggestions. So we wanted to know which of the 2018 selection are the best, sexiest or most dramatic movies showcasing love between two women or girls. Which are the unmissable films of 2018?

Best Lesbian Films ’18 by Couple of Men

If you are a fan of lesbians movies, you might already have heard about some of the top movies of this year. Some of them have very popular casts. And because Filmfest homochrom sports a rather concise programme of 27 films – in past years they had up to 60 movies, but unfortunately they had to cancel their short film competitions this year – you can expect very strong, touching and funny movies in the two German cities. The Lesbian Film Festival List by Couple of Men help you plan your perfect festival week in Cologne (October 16-21) or a nice long weekend in Dortmund (October 25-28) by giving you the top 5 lesbian movies this year. Looking for some movies? Check out our lesbian film list for the Amsterdam Roze Filmdagen! We hope you enjoy your festival experience, so show your pride and maybe give some love back. Have fun watching the 5 Top Lesbian Films Filmfest Homochrom 2018 selected for the 8th edition and don’t miss our 5 Top Gay Films for this year’s Filmfest as well!

#1 The Miseducation of Cameron Post | USA

The Grand Jury Prize winner of Sundance is definitely a must for any queer film festival and their audiences this year. The sophomore film of Desiree Akhavan („Appropriate Behavior“) is an adaptation of Emily Danforth’s novel and stars Chloë Grace Moretz and Jennifer Ehle. But it’s how the film deals with conversion therapy. The story, which is set in the 1990s, might appear like a serious version of „But I’m a Cheerleader“ (1999), but it’s really hitting a nail. And it is a timely topic with the EU considering a legal end to ex-gay camps. Cameron Post (Moretz) is sent to God’s Promise after having been discovered making out with her best friend, a girl. She doesn’t know why she should have to change, and the evangelical center doesn’t seem to know what they are doing. A brilliant movie, with a career-best by Moretz (“Kick-Ass”, “Carrie”, “The Equalizer”), this is a film you should not miss.

#2 My Days of Mercy | USA

We have already mentioned this film as a top lesbian movie early this year for Roze Filmdagen, but this film continues its excellent festival run in Germany. Ellen Page and Kate Mara play two women who fall in love with protesting pro and against the death penalty. The emotional drama “My Days of Mercy” is much better than Page’s first lesbian movie, „Freeheld“. After they meet at a protest outside a jail, protagonists Lucy and Mercy embark on a sweet and down-to-earth love story. Stellar performances make this thoughtful drama high on the list of the Best Lesbian Movies 2018.

Schauburg in Dortmund: 27th October 2018 – 21:00 Hours

#3 Daddy Issues | USA

Wow, this debut by Amara Cash is a beautifully stylish film, dreamy, yet kinky. If you want to see a queer aesthetics par excellence, you have to see this film, which won the best director in London and an audience award at Outfest L.A.  Twenty-something Maya is an aspiring artist who falls in love with designer Jasmine, who is already in a weird co-dependent relationship with her sugar daddy. Maya’s naive point of view makes a delicious perspective for a subversive social farce which hits the sweet spot with lush neon-colored visuals. As a pure work of conceptual art, „Daddy Issue“ makes perfect use of editing, cinematography, and music. This lesbian-bisexual love triangle is a dramedy which needs to be seen on the big screen.

Schauburg in Dortmund: 28th October 2018 – 18:45 Hours

#4 Eva + Candela | Colombia

The Spanish writer, director, and executive producer Ruth Caudeli tells a lesbian relationship from beginning to end in her debut „Eva + Candela“. Yes, you may already know that it’s an unhappy ending for film director Candela and her lead actress Eva who fall in love and start living together. But it’s not so much knowing the end (which the film makes clear from the beginning), but how the heart-felt story is told. Jumping back and forth through episodes of their relationship turning family, the bitter-sweet romance feels honest and balanced. The beautiful, but rather unknown Latin-American actresses Silvia Varón and Alejandra Lara share a great screen chemistry and have a nuanced charisma that makes this film intriguing to watch. You will definitely share the excitement of new love and the quarrels of an evolving long-term relationship driven by the filmmakers‘ careers. It’s a beautifully emotional rollercoaster.

#5 Wild Nights with Emily | USA

What if poet Emily Dickinson had been queer? Wait, maybe she really was lesbian. There have been hints, but this smug re-interpretation of her life really does make sense. Filmmaker Madeleine Olnek has already entertained us with weird comedies like „Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same“ and „The Foxy Merkins“. But „Wild Nights with Emily“ is of a completely different caliber. Very witty, deliciously understated and pointedly critical, Olnek even got permission from Harvard Press to use Dickinson’s original text—however they managed that because the movie feels very satirical. But this lends her film a lot of authority, while her cast spellbinds with spot-on comedic performances. And then there’s Molly Shannon’s performance as Emily which simply makes this one of the very best lesbian films of 2018. After seeing this film you will also believe that a forgotten queer hero has just been re-discovered. Or at least re-claimed. And you don’t want to miss such an über funny feminist patriarchy bashing.

Schauburg in Dortmund:27th October 2018 – 19:20 Hours
