Update: Today, 6 December 2017, the parliament of Australia passed the bill to allow two people, regardless of sex, to get married in Australia. A beautiful moment happened during the same-sex-marriage debate: an Australian MP proposes to partner in parliament. In the end, love wins.
Australians say YES to Same-Sex Marriage! – Australia is about to be the next country joining the list of the 24 countries already allowing same-sex marriage by law. After Germany this summer, Australia could become the 25th country legalizing marriage between two people of the same gender. By taking the decision to hold an exceptional public opinion poll as a postal vote on same-sex marriage, the Australians had been free to vote for or against marriage equality. Although the final decision has still to be made in the Australian parliament, the Australian LGBTQ+ community took a huge step forward today, November 15th, 2017.
Today, while Western Europe was still asleep, the results of the postal votes have been announced. In total, 12.7 million people (or 80% of the eligible voters) from all over Australia cast a vote in the past months. Overwhelming 61,6 % of them voted YES for same-sex marriage in Australia. Congratulations from Amsterdam to our LGBTQ+ friends and allies Downunder for the great news in the morning! We hope, that now as the public opinion was made very clear, Malcolm Turnbull, the Prime Minister of Australia keeps his promise to urge the Australian parliament to decide in a parliamentary vote in favor of the people’s opinion about equality and for love before Christmas.

Australia Voted Yes Same-Sex Marriage!
Starting on September 12th, 2017, the Australians who had registered to vote were asked to give their yes or no to same-sex marriage and return the postal survey until November 7th, 2017. During that time, supporters and their opponents campaigned to get as many votes as possible. Especially, neo-nazi groups created homophobic posters with disgustingly awful posters pointing out, that same-sex marriage is all about pedophilia, violence against children and legalizing perverse constructions of the rainbow families. Luckily, they have not been successful. Now it is time to believe in the democratically elected politicians of the Australian parliament to decide what the majority of Australia voted for: Australia Voted Yes Same-Sex Marriage!

The people of Australia have spoken and I intend to make their wish the law by Christmas. This is an overwhelming call for marriage equality.
Congratulations to the Australian LGBTQ+ community!
