Our gay couple hotel review of the Berlin Hotel am Steinplatz. As gay couple travel bloggers, we are always on the lookout for hotels that not only offer luxurious amenities and prime locations but also prioritize inclusivity and diversity. When we discovered that Hotel am Steinplatz in Berlin Charlottenburg was part of the Marriott family and listed under the Pink Pillow Collection, we knew we had to check it out. Located in one of the poshest areas of Berlin, the Charlottenburg neighborhood, the accommodation boasts a 5-star rating and a history dating back to the early 20th century. The hotel has undergone significant renovations before reopening in 2013. Enjoy the photos and stories of our Couple of Men hotel review of the gay-friendly historic Hotel am Steinplatz in Berlin!

Welcome to Hotel am Steinplatz in Berlin West
Warm smiles from the reception staff greeted us the moment we set food in the hotel and the lobby. The friendliness and prudence made us immediately feel welcome. After the uncomplicated check-in with a glass of homemade lemonade, while waiting, it was time to check out our “home” for a long weekend in Berlin. Our first impression: The renovation managed to retain its classic charm while incorporating modern comforts and design, starting from the outside, and smoothly transitioning to the interior design of the lobby. The hotel’s marble, black, and white decor is stunning, with Art Deco influences and contemporary touches that create a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.
Gay Berlin Travel Guide
According to the Spartacus Gay Travel Index, Germany ranks among the top LGBT-friendly countries in the world, including Berlin. The German capital is organizing one of the most significant LGBTQ+ Pride events in Europe. It’s time for you to travel to Berlin!
Junior Suite at the Hotel am Steinplatz
Our booking included four nights in a junior suite with breakfast from, what we would learn the next morning, an insanely rich buffet (à la carte and buffet), a Sekt tasting (so-called “German Champagne”) and access to the hotel’s wellness area. The hotel staff tried to make our stay extra comfortable by putting in thoughtful details in our spacious room with little pastries and a personal welcome note from the hotel manager. With high ceilings, plush bedding, and a sleek bathroom, we could not have hoped for more luxury in our Junior Suite. Additionally, we appreciated the complimentary bottled water, coffee, and tea maker, as well as the nightly turn-down service.
The Junior Suites are uniquely individual, each equipped with a bathtub and a huge separate rain shower, providing a luxurious and personalized experience. The corridors of the hotel are well soundproofed, which added significantly to a good night’s sleep and our private, undisturbed stay. After a day of exploring Berlin’s West, we sometimes just sat down in the lounge before taking the elevator to our air-conditioned room. Just because the comfortable leather armchairs in the lounge were so inviting and comfortable for winding down and taking a book out of the shelf, not our book though — yet.
Pink Pillow Collection certified
But what really sets the Hotel am Steinplatz apart is its commitment to inclusivity and acceptance. As part of the Pink Pillow Collection, the hotel supports the LGBTQ+ community and offers resources and support for queer travelers. This was evident in the friendly and respectful treatment we received from all staff members, who never made us feel out of place or uncomfortable.
During our stay, we also learned that the hotel regularly participates in Berlin Pride and hosts events celebrating diversity and unity. We were thrilled to be able to support a hotel that shares our values and actively works towards creating a more inclusive world. During Pride last summer, we received a cute little present with pride cookies and a pride note written on our bathroom mirror!
A jewel of Berlin hotel history
As LGBTQ+ travelers, we were delighted to explore the history behind Hotel am Steinplatz, a grand hotel located in the heart of Charlottenburg in West Berlin. This architectural gem, designed by August Endell, was originally opened in 1913 by Max Zellermayer as a luxury hotel, quickly becoming a cultural meeting place for Berlin’s elites, travelers, artists, and writers. Back then, Berlin was a haven for LGBTQ+ people, and the hotel was known for its liberal and progressive atmosphere. One could conclude that in the 1920s, LGBTQ+ people also chose the hotel as a place to meet and stay. That obviously changed during the Second World War. And although the hotel continued to operate, it was only in an improvised fashion.
Today, after meticulous restoration work, the hotel shines in new splendor, enriching the area with a hotel in a class of its own. The hotel’s Art Nouveau architecture still captivates passersby with its striking olive-green facade. At the same time, the sweeping ornamentation on the entrance canopy incorporates shell, fern, and bat motifs found in nature. But that’s not all we must mention in this gay-friendly hotel review.
Fun & luxury facilities at Hotel am Steinplatz
Restaurant am Steinplatz
The hotel’s restaurant “Restaurant am Steinplatz” serves up delicious cuisine in a stylish, modern setting that’s sure to impress. Oliver Fritz and his culinary team craft aromatic dishes in the hotel’s kitchen, utilizing various seasonal and regional ingredients that draw inspiration from natural flavors. Whether you’re in the mood for a gourmet meal or a light snack, the restaurant has something for everyone.
Bar am Steinplatz
With its “Timeless” drink menu, the hotel’s bar, “Bar am Steinplatz” strongly focuses on regional, high-quality products. Travelers, who are looking for a great place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, will be transported “Back to Basic” and therefore back to the 1920s. The bar offers an extensive selection of wines, spirits, and cocktails. We were sure to find something to suit our taste: two glasses of Sekt, the German version of Champagne and sparkling wine.
Wellness, Gym and Spa
After Berlin Pride or a day at the ITB Travel Show, we sought time to relax in the hotel’s luxurious spa facilities. With various treatments available, you can indulge in some much-needed pampering in a serene and tranquil environment. Two saunas, a gym, and a relaxation area located right under the roof were just perfect for a day of recharging our batteries. Overall, the Hotel am Steinplatz is the perfect choice for those seeking a luxurious, fun-filled hotel during a city trip or a more extended stay in Berlin.
