Our Carinthia Gay Travel Guide Southern Austria
Carinthia Gay Travel Guide Southern Austria: The southern part of Austria is known to be the “sunny side of the Alps”. Wide valleys, turquoise blue mountain lakes, and spectacular views over the tops of the Karnische Alpen and Karawanken are just a few reasons for this region in Austria to be a well-known holiday destination for families. But couples and active single travelers will find exciting activities indoors and outdoors in the summer as well as during the winter.
We traveled to Carinthia flying to Klagenfurt and driving around with a rental car. We arrived after a 20-minutes ride in Velden am Wörthersee, where we stayed at the modern, stylish, and gay-friendly ROCKET ROOMS Hotel. From here, we started our explorations around the world-famous Lake Wörth with its castle visiting the Pyramidenkogel, hiking to Saint Kathrein, buying traditional Austrian Lederhosen, and attending the 10th edition of the Pink Lake Festival am Wörthersee. The region Carinthia and Wörthersee is a fantastic place for hiking, mountain biking, any kind of water sports, and a great cuisine influenced by Italy and Slovenia just around the corner. Although it still is a conservative area where LGBTQ+ people still can experience surprised faces when walking hand-in-hand, Carinthia is in a process of change. We are happy to support these changes by introducing you to the gay-friendly and sunny side of Carinthia in the Austrian Alps during the popular Pink Lake Festival!
