The fact that there was visibly little budget for the production really didn’t seem to have bothered anyone when the My Best Gay Friends series started on YouTube in 2013. The series reaches millions of views within a very short time. Lebanon has a reputation in the Middle East for being the most liberal of all countries when it comes to homosexuality, transgender and the LGBTQ + community in general. For example, in 2017, Lebanon was the first country in the Arab world where gay pride events (such as the Beirut Pride) took place. At least 4,000 people took part in it at the time. Already in the years before, various NGOs, such as Proud Lebanon and Helem, organized public LGBTQ + events.

Renowned LGBTQ+ activist Yelena Grigoriyeva was found dead in St. Petersburg in mid-July, with several stab wounds in the chest and signs of strangulation. Previously, Grigoriyeva had received several death threats after her name appeared on a list of a now-blocked website that had hunted down sexual minorities and their supporters.

Everyone knows them because in the LGBTQ+ community they almost have a legendary status. The following people have actively campaigned for gay and lesbian equality fought for LGBTQ+ rights and, in a very special way, ensured that attention could be drawn to change the perception of the lesbian, gay, trans and queer lives.
