Hiking Svínafellsjökull Glacier at Skaftafell National Park

Hiking Svínafellsjökull Glacier at Skaftafell National Park

A Gay Couple hiking Svínafellsjökull Glacier – During our road trip once around Iceland, we had one thing very high on our Iceland-bucket list: hiking on an Icelandic Glacier. Skaftafell National Park was the perfect location during our camping trip. After parking our car and the check-in at the small wooden house of Arctic Adventures, the fitting of our “ice-shoes” followed. A small tour bus drove us together with 10 other explorers and our tour guide Síf to the foot of the glacier tongue of Svínafellsjökull. Equipped with our camera, crampons, and ice-picks, the tour started heading towards the thousand of years old ice in single file. The backstory of all the geological particularities told by our amazing tour guide was simply impressive. More to read about our whole story of the Exploration of Skaftafell National Park here >

We could hear the ice cracking, meltwater running through endless deep ice cracks, so-called crevasses, and see the protected botanical mosses laying on the surface of the ice. Síf, our tour guide, had an answer to all our questions and made us feel the intensity and power of the ice movement downhill. The information about the impact of climate change and the process of the shrinking glacier ice was worrying, seriously. If you can go to Iceland, don’t miss the unique experience of being so close to the glacier ice. In about 10 years, this glacier might not exist anymore. It might make you change your mind about what is important in life and how to treat our environment.

Tourism: the solution for the Icelandic Nation

However, we really enjoyed the time on ice and how enthusiastic our guide was. She told us a lot about the history of this part of Iceland and about the people around and how narrow-minded they had been before the crisis that changed the mindset of the whole country. Tourism became the solution for the Icelandic Nation. Nature here around stayed the same: No-man’s-land Skaftafell Glacier Iceland, a true story. As you can imagine, this no-man’s-land is made for Sagas and fairy tales. For instance, the huge giant rocks and stones lying around everywhere on and in the ice. Do you know where these black goblets come from? The Icelandic people answering this question with interesting fairy tales. Ask for example for the story of the two giant brothers fighting about the only female troll around by throwing rocks at each other…  or was the ice transporting the giant rocks downhill?
